INTRODUCTION
Students credited with this National Diploma will understand how producers manage the farm business in the agricultural environment. They will also understand the management functions, production decisions, how to utilise resources, manage finances and evaluate agricultural assets. They will also understand the economics of plant and animal production and how to conduct marketing. Through the computer modules the student is presented with the theoretical knowledge that they will need to be computer literate to manage the farm.

Course Information
GENERAL AIMS & OBJECTIVES
- Students must be able to make a productive contribution to a farming enterprise as a manager or owner.
- Students must develop interest, knowledge and skills to be able to apply principles of farming management.
- Students must develop the faculty of critical thinking and the ability to work responsibly and independently.
- Students must develop the social abilities to deveolop economic independence to fulfil their role in the community.
COURSE CONTENT
MANAGEMENT : FARMING
This subject outlines the functions and responsibilities of all role-players in agriculture, factors that impact on agricultural production as well as environmental factors influencing agriculture. It focuses on the role of the farmer
as an entrepreneur, as well as farm and estate planning with an overview of key aspects of insurance applicable to the farmer.
DATA MANAGEMENT : FARMING
This subject provides students with skills to do basic computer functions – covering Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT : FARMING
Financial Management: Farming teaches the basic accounting principles in relation to farm management. The subject matter focuses on farm budgeting systems, analysis of information systems and the interpretation
of financial statements, balance sheets and income statements.
MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT: FARMING
This field of study empowers the student with skills to do basic maintenance on the farm. It includes vehicle maintenance, basic welding techniques, building and electrical installations as well as health and safety procedures.
EVALUATION
INTERNAL EVALUATION
An internal semester mark is compiled from marks for the theoretical components over each one semester period.
EXAMINATION
External examinations are conducted at the end of the semester. The question paper is set, marked and moderated externally by the DHET.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING
In order to pass the instructional offering, a student muct obtain a final mark of 40% with a sub-minimum of 40% for both semester mark and the examination mark. The semester mark and the examination mark will be added together in a ratio of 40:60 to obtain the promotion mark.
One 3 hr paper of 200 marks is written at the end of the semester for each instructional offering.
